Our Mission Matters
The Comeback Cats, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) dedicated to protecting, uplifting, and advocating for stray and feral cats in Newark, NJ and surrounding areas. We're committed to the compassionate, ethical stewardship of homeless animals by providing them with loving care, safe shelter, and a nurturing environment. We aim to educate and empower others to practice responsible pet care and the humane treatment of all animals, fostering a culture of kindness and respect towards all creatures.

Introducing Chosen
Chosen recently came to The Comeback Cats as a surrender, and his story is one that breaks your heart because it is far too common in our community.
Through no fault of his own, Chosen’s family faced an unhousing crisis and had no choice but to surrender him to the Associated Humane Society in Newark. His owner reached out to me in absolute desperation—grieving the loss of her companion and terrified because Chosen was deteriorating quickly in the shelter environment.
Shelter staff had labeled him “unadoptable” due to his loud vocalizations and defensive behavior. But those behaviors weren’t who Chosen truly was. This was a cat who had been loved from kittenhood, raised gently for two full years in a stable home, and suddenly found himself frightened, confused, and grieving. His world had changed overnight, and he didn’t understand why.
When his owner told me her story, my heart ached.
I know what it feels like to lose stability and to watch an animal you love struggle because of circumstances beyond your control. I couldn’t let Chosen continue to suffer, so I went to AHS and brought him home to The Comeback Cats.
I also want to extend a heartfelt thank‑you to the staff at Associated Humane Society in Newark. They were fiercely advocating for Chosen, determined to find a volunteer or rescue who could step in and give this sweet boy a chance. Their compassion, persistence, and refusal to give up on him made all the difference. Chosen had champions in that building—people who saw past his fear and believed he deserved better.
Chosen is still hurting. He misses his people deeply, and he’s trying to make sense of everything that has happened. But beneath the fear, he is still the same gentle soul he has always been—and our goal is to help him rediscover that sweetness, to give him safety, patience, and love until he feels whole again.
Chosen’s story is a reminder that every animal has a history, a heart, and sometimes, a family who once cared for them. And here at the Comeback Cats, he will always be treated with the compassion he deserves.
